Proprietary Extensions

I am new to the SQL learning module. In the basic concepts section under "What is SQL?" the notes mention: "Most SQL database programs have their own proprietary extensions in addition to the SQL standard, but all them support the major commands." Can someone explain proprietary extensions in this context? Thanks.

What it means was that several major DBMS (DataBase Management System) vendor implements their own features, and/or facilities, which the developers believed, will help in accomplishing a certain task, or ease their users on doing something. But these spoils do not conform to the standard SQL, which by means, if it was available in a certain DBMS product - it may not be available in another, or it is available, but differs syntactically, or algorithmically. There is no "one size fits all" kind of thing with these "proprietary" stuffs, and switching between one DBMS to another may require additional learning due to the differences. Hth, cmiiw
