Is a degree in Computer Science (or related field) worth persuing?

If I want to change my career path, and eventually be working somewhere in the field of 'tech', should I consider going back to University or College to study. Or continue with my self-directed learning using the resources available online and in books?

A degree somewhat helps catch the recruiter's attention BUT ultimately what is going to get you hired is a very well made PORTFOLIO showcasing your projects. At the end of the day, the employer wants to see if you know your stuff or not, they don't care much about a piece of paper (degree).

You just need good skills for most of the professions. Because degree is just a proof that you have taken a course. You need degrees only to work at very big companies - like google, microsoft, etc.
