What is the difference between Web application and Desktop application ?

A web application is something you can access over a network while desktop application is used only on a personal device and is not usually shared by many people.
Example of desktop application is MS Word, Calculator, etc. Even a HTML page not hosted is a desktop application. For example Anaconda framework for Python host itself on localserver and also use HTML, but it's a desktop application not shared by people in network.
