Both are objected oriented language. If you see from the programmer side, java is more popular since everything is given you just need to use it. But if u see from the system side, c++ is more closer to the hardware and it makes c++ faster than java.

Java is one of the best programming language created ever, and I am not saying this because I am a passionate Java developer, but Java has proved it in last 20 years.
