Nothing is better then anything Java is better for its own kind of things and python is better for its own kind of them but in the end both can satisfy your needs. Some prefer java and some prefer python.

Basically every programming language out there has its advantages and disadvantages. It depends on what you are planning to do with it. I work as a Java developer and java was my first programming language I was truly engaged with. I think Java isn't that hard to learn after you have understood the basics of OOP (Objected Oriented Programming). Python is also OOP but as far as I understood not as a whole. I didn't used to test out Python as much as I wanted, but what I have seen/ heared so far I think I could implement it into some projects in near future. Also note that Python is very versatile and light weighted, basically you can program a whole game or just a little script with it.

Coming from a VB and C# background I hated Python. I just couldn't get the hang of it. That being said I never really gave it a chance. Now that I am doing some Android App Development I've been using Java for about 10 months and although I've had some very frustrating moments I found it much easier to understand. But as Miro and Mazhar Khan already said it really depends on what your end goal is.
