Do companies use IDE's to work or do they use something else to write code for projects?

May seem a silly question however without being exposed to a software engineering/development environment I'm curious how or what they use to write code & work on projects? Is it off the shelf like Visual studio or something in house?

There are well known IDE that people use (rather than inhouse) popular IDE are eclipse, intellij, netbeans, visual studio...
