HTML is XML. XML is a data storing language and the web uses specific custom xml tags (named HTML tags) to render graphics, elements etc... You can make your own data-storing struct with XML too as android did...

HTML refers to Hyper Text Markup Language. XML refers to Extensible Markup Language.

Not really... They might look similar on the surface, but they were built for different purposes. https://www.w3schools.com/xml/xml_whatis.asp

HTML is used mostly for the presentation layer, to build web pages. XML is used for data transport, it was invented as a workaround to cope with difference amongst various data formats from different DBMS. With XML being used to transport data, clients need less concern about how data is structured, because the data is presented as text contained within tags. The similarities are that HTML & XML are both markup languages, but XML is a more "customized" markup language, because the tags are used to contain data definition and values. Hth, cmiiw
