Java is a popular language. Being a compiled language it is faster than interpreted languages. However it is hard to learn, even harder to code, and is hard to debug. This has lead to a reaction in the form of better ways to code using the JVM using languages like Clojure(which is a dialect of Lisp) and Scala( an amalgam of Python and Ruby style of code).

The reason it is still used is because a lot of legacy systems still run on Java, especially banking systems, and when that kind of money is involved, few people would risk it on another language. This is the main reason Java has survived till now.
