In short, it's creating algorithms that can make a program extract data, analyze it, make predictions and learn from it. Example: Every time you hit the 👍button on a movie or series on Netflix, it 'learns' what kind of content you like and based on that it makes you recommendations of other movies/series. We will need more of it in the future as there's billions of data being generated every minute around the world, something must be done with it, it's faster for a computer program to handle all of it and learn from it than a human. Machine learning is using particular data structure and algorithms to make a program process a big amount of data and learn how to do a particular task without being explicitely programmed to do it. There are several possible implementations to do this, some examples are decision tree learning, neural networks, genetic algorithms, rule based learning, and many many more. Machine learning's future is bright: all you need for it to work is a big amount of data to learn from, and a lot of computational speed. AlphaGo (a program that plays the board game Go) is already the strongest player in history; other chess programs are almost there too; companies like google are making self driving cars, helicopters, drones and trains; and there are so many more applications for machine learning! There's no doubt that in the future, with increasing cpu speeds, we will see really extraordinary things done with machine learning :)

There rumour that they say machine learning will replace programming. I find these claims hilarious. An AI is only as smart as the programmer makes it. plus when break down who fix lol.
