Is there any relations between mathematics and programming/coding?

I have seen a lot of people who excels at math and then they try to learn computer science or informatics and they usually has a rapid performance compared to people in general. Take for an example, my friend takes on the National Olympiad at math many times, but he never gets a medal, so he tries to move to Informatics and the first time he tried that, he Immedietly gets a medal. So what does the thing that makes this people better at programming when having a great performance in mathematics?

It depends on the area of programming- Data science or AI may need more maths, and often embedded programming, but web design needs hardly any. Basic knowledge in Maths is enough.

If you want to get technical math is required to create the very platform we use to code. Imaginary numbers are used heavily in electrical engineering which are the people who help create the integrated systems we use to code. But in terms of coding only, it really depends on what you are doing. If you're coding for fun or a hobby you may not need any background in mathematics. But if you're working on a system to, say, convert an analog value from a sensor to a digital value in a microcontroller or using a Fourier transform for frequency analysis you will need a pretty solid foundation in mathematics.

I see, so maybe there's a quite difference and that difference gets bigger time by time, any other thing maybe?
