Nobody can tell you the future, however, python is increasing in popularity for its simple syntax and the fact that almost anything can be done with it. Java, is decreasing is popularity. This is a very simple version of what everything is currently based on.

I can't see Python being the #1 language. Nothing can replace C-Family languages (C, C++; not C# and Obj-C) in my eyes. Python is too slow, and it reaches a point of simplicity where it is just... too simple... I don't know though, we'll see.

Building on what Jonathan said, while Python is slower we may reach a point where the computers are fast enough to run the most complicated thing we can think of in python in a measure of time so small that the slowness is not noticeable.
