Do you need to know Java to learn JavaScript?

That is like asking does Russian help you learn Punjabi. They are totally unrelated languages.

@Akash Pal: Both Java and Javascript are OOP languages ^^ Main deep difference is that Java is class based oop, while Javascript is prototype based oop... And they are similarities in syntax and grammar (but not in how it acts) because Javascript syntax/grammar was inspired by Java (which was inspired by C), but each one could be source of confusing between others since they don't share behaviour...

Java and Javascript are only name related... Both language are very different, even if they share similar syntax/grammar...
