As Jamie said, it really depends on the company. Most of the companies in Finland, are looking only for experience, and rarely hire straight from Uni. There are the few companies that are known to abuse the fact that University students are desperate and in need work. They offer them jobs for really bad rates, because of the fact that they don't have the experience nor degree yet. In my opinion, your best bet as a programmer is to create something on your own, and built upon it. Then after you have created something somewhat meaningful and published it, that has basically the same worth as a university degree to employers. Although, you have to be careful with such projects, because you can easily get carried away in to something that you're not ready for. (Your code goes 'viral', and people try to find ways to steal it)

due to too many high institutions/colleges/universities degrees and fake degrees in IT related fields, many hiring firms consider so little when it comes to degree certificate and much in your skills and what you are capable of doing
