Also, in the article he puts it as "It's not just hardware! It's software too." Software isn't what's consuming the energy, it's still just the hardware that's doing that. However, it's the software that's giving the hardware instructions on what it should be doing or not, so if you're giving it inefficient instructions then you'll cause it to consume more energy than necessary. That's why if you look, it's all of the "babysitter" programming languages that are the least efficient; takes a lot of energy to accommodate for people not wanting to program like one should. Making things more readable/"easier" for humans doesn't make it better for the machine that isn't concerned with such trivial matters.
