Is there a way of stopping notifications of comments ?

Yes, there is one....
Below the title, there will be a star shaped button..
Just press/click it to stop getting notifications from that thread..

Tap the star icon 🌟 to follow/ unfollow a post.

The Star icon is visible on each post, not in settings. Like you'll get one on this post, at right below the title as Cool codin mentioned :)
(If you are using the iOS version, then the features may vary)

thanks @Yasmin and @Cool Codin, looked for it in settings and like it didn't work.
