Best is just relative to what you're doing. I can think that a hammer is the best tool, but if my house is on fire, I'd rather be using a fire hose. Get what I mean?
With that being said, the languages I see mostly in game development is C#, C++, and Java. Although, it's not limited to just those.
Mainstream game engines and their language:
Unity3D (C#)
Unreal (C++)
I'm a Unity developer, so I'm going to be bias about Unity/C# and recommend/suggest that it's the best. However, I also know Unreal and it's equally amazing. You'll want to assess what your goals are, and check out all of them so you can properly assess your decision instead of making a blind one. The more you learn about each, the better discernment you can make.
Best of luck!

I'm a self-learner also, so no worries.
Unity Scripting (read/do all of it, also do ALL of their tutorials on their website - you learn a LOT):

Also, I use Maya and Blender. Most things you can just do directly from those programs, and then you'll simply import them into Unity so you can utilize them as assets. Most of the "drawing" directly in Unity is basic in comparison to using one of those programs, but Unity has added a lot of their own animation/graphics stuff to Unity over the years, and it's pretty useful also. While you're on their website, I would read up on on everything else also so you can better understand when to use one over the other.
Best of luck to you!
