Just to prove you wrong. Someone says something mean and you decide to choke them. In this situation, you should give up because you don't want to choke them to death over something petty that doesn't matter, more importantly you don't want to kill them because of your own insecurities that you need to deal with.

Just sayin. :D In many situations, including learning how to program, I agree that you shouldn't give up.
