There are several very nice IDE (Integrated Development Environment) for writing and debugging Java programs such as eclipse, IntelliJ IDEA and Netbeans. You can search them in google and download them for free. The second one has two versions ultimate which is for sale and community which is totally free.

I would recommend eclipse for beginners and advanced programmers.
