How to create a forum

I am helping in redesigning my college website and want to create a forum for the students for discussion about things related to college matters. What are some easy and robust methods to create forums. should I create whole forum manually or edit some existing framework according to my requirements. also mention the best technologies for the task helpful in further programming career. I would suggest you to use open source forum software like phpBB, MyBB, or SMF. Why? Because using open source software means you don't need to make all stuff from scratch, that'll eliminate many bad factor (security stuff, bug, code stardard, time and money). Another great reason is because you will have your time and you can make modules or theme for the forum instead making the whole forum.
