Messaging like facebook

I have been searching through different websites for private peer to peer messaging in php, but all I have through out are chatroom codes. Please can someone help me with p2p messaging in php like facebook.

What you need is a websocket. My advice is to research abiut socket.io using javascript and you can add it to your php project
