what is "core java" ?

they mean the basic language standard edition. Specifically the massive libraries it includes, especially Collections. There are a load more libraries in the enterprise edition but you don't need them for Core Java, which is covered here.

There are a couple of excellent books Core Java 1&2 you should read. I've not read the second one but the first, by Cay Horstmann was invaluable.
