For Building an Android App, you don't want to be strong on XML. But for Designing Purpose, you need to know XML. But now, Android Studio (To edit XML files on text mode or design mode) will make it easy to design without any knowledge on XML. If you have some basic knowledge on XML, then it would be easy for you to use both text mode and design mode on Android Studio.
