Why is C# not widely used as Java even though it almost offers everything java does?

Pardon my limited knowledge as I'm not sure how far the below holds true.

C# can also be used for Android and IOS development with Xamarin and Unity(for game development). I've also heard that mono allows to develop applications on Linux and Mac.

Java is older and more people know it.
Java is better for creating IDE's
C# is almost as widely as used as java. Its just a common myth people have.
C# is taught in any computer science class at high school where i live. And is commonly used

it is incorrect c# is a better c++
and c++ is way older then java.
the main reason java is widly used is becuase it a open source language while c languages are microsoft owned..
and java can be used in any platform.
