is javascript important to learn in depth?

is learning javascript in depth important?
to my knowledge javascript is only used for simple functions such as to create navigation toggle, create a smooth scroll on the page and others, that's what I see on most web.
is it for a javascript front end web developer mandatory to learn?
or just people who want to make a game only?

I've seen applications/games based solely on javascript.learning how to scroll and use simple js functions wouldn't make you understand how to create this apps.I know there are alternatives like java but in some areas JavaScript is more suited than the other giants
