Well, VisualBasic and C# are both languages using the .NET framework. The both compile to medium languages and the to machine code. You CAN use the VB in C# application and C# in VB application. VisualBasic was before just Basic - one of the first languages. That's why Microsoft adobted it. After java showed up as WOCE - write once compile everywhere, Microsoft attacked back with C# and .NET 1.0. In practice you'll find easy making Microsoft apps extensions with VB - it's the main language (this can be done with VBA - VB for applications).
