Seriously, alcohol is something I quit aeons ago for medical reasons. Smoking was tough though. But I wrote a game and was smoking as I typed, so it's not a problem IMHO. Also wrote a book, too. My reason for quitting was I wanted to because it was a waste of cash. It was the hardest thing ever (and I cheated Death thrice). To quit smoking, you must want to...genuinely! Even now I sometimes have the odd one. I realise, being well-read, it's more the ritual than chemicals, but even armed with that knowledge I cave a few times a year.
Look, it won't mess up your coding, but smoking is bad for you and a waste of cash (one year clean will buy you an awesome gfx card). Drinking is bad. I spent a year drunk nearly every day. You won't program or write or create at all; you'll have parties at 13h00 with other losers, make out with (and sleep with) girls -- even fat or ugly ones -- whose names you'll never know. If you have even a fraction of common sense, quit drinking.
I realise this thread was a joke, but I'm hoping this message reaches people, especially youngsters, who read it.

I'm studying computer science, I don't smoke, I only drink at weekends... So no, neither affects my programming and if anything, I'd say I'm more addicted to coding.

đ I suppose that would depend on what you were smoking and drinking. Some people would say coffee really helps get their mind going. I believe a cigarette break can help me re-focus when I am stressing over a particular problem.
