It's scripting that takes place from the user's end; from their browser. Server-side scripting takes place on the server, rather than on the user's local end. The combination of the two is what allows you to do all of the neat interactive stuff with webpages.
Client-side example: Javascript, jQuery, etc...
Server-side example: PHP, NodeJS, ASP.net, etc..
