How can you learn programming all by yourself?

We have inept, completely useless professors who fail to teach us the very basics. I wish to ensure that I actually LEARN something rather than memorising codes for my theory exams.

to be honest without learning from an expert you cannot do very well in this field at least for programming basics a good teacher can save your several years in comparison if you go solo..

That's very hard to support this kind "teachers" but firstly you learn for yourself. Learn programming really request a lot of time and to get through this you can: - Help each others with others students - Watch some videos on Youtube OR buy 2-3 lessons on classroom websites to help you start (Ex of websites: video2brain, lynda) - Read code from others and try to catch some mechanism and for sure practice, practice, practice,...
