How does the opponent really participate in a challenge, could it be live or how does the game work?

Question

When someone challenges you using a weapon in SoloLearn, you get notified, but what happens if you accept the challenge when the person is not online, the game is still played, anyway....?

In order to challenge you, one needs to complete all the tasks so when you accept the challenge you can always see your opponent's results.
