what are good ways to gain professional experience with coding
how does a beginner get involved with open source or other projects?
how does one know he or she is ready to get involved with a project?

Hey,
just try to get in contact with code from an open source project.
Read the code, try to understand it, discuss it and so on.
here in germany, some groups needs someone to translate the GUI, this could be the first contact and then... just dive in.
an other way would just to be to code something that could make your day easier =D
