How Does Sololearn Calculate "Nearby" Learners?

Hey everyone, I've been puzzling over this for awhile now, and can't seem to find a suitable answer anywhere: How does Sololearn calculate who is a nearby learner? This is a two part question I guess: Firstly, does Sololearn determine nearby Learners based on a geographical radius of a set range, or is it based on something else? Secondly, in determining nearby Learners, is SL pulling from only active users nearby, or everybody that has ever joined nearby? Because weirdly enough the number seems to fluctuate mostly up, but sometimes down as well. Any knowledge on this would be very welcome, thanks.

Hi Coder and Anthony Quick I don't have a clue. Honestly I have never used the option and I find it a bit peculiar. I don't agree with paying a fee to gain the ability to potentially stalk others. If someone wants to disclose their location to me or others that's great otherwise I feel it's not my business. I opt not to use the ability out of concern people are simply not aware their location is on and feel as though it violates their right to privacy. But that's just my opinion.

Coder They are honestly moderators and not the developers of Sololearn so they might not be the best people to ask 😒

Currently it is showing me 255 learners near me, which is I think kind of weird. I'm not sure about difference in this feature for a pro and a normal user. It actually does not fluctuating for me. When I'm at college it ain't changing all though when I was 240km away from my regular location it magically showed up me more than 600(I've made a post about it too which is impossible to find now 😅) So what I figured out is it is based on cities.(just my opinion)

My nearbys vary from 0 to 1 or 2. I'm guessing it is based on online and some distance. The distance could be based on what country you live in so that maybe those that travel to different cities might still be within the same area. However, SoloLearn seldom shares design information with the mods so we tend to be as in the dark as normal users.

I don't know. For me there are 2351 nearby users.

Good question... I'm not certain the nearby feature works. I know several people nearby with SL accounts, including a child (in my household) who don't appear in my nearby list.

bobbie oh I see... I hadn't really thought of the security concern that may pose to be honest, or of the idea of "stalking," since they could do that just as easily from the leaderboard... But I guess it could be a concern in certain countries, especially in Western countries. Thanks for your input, and good luck on your site. It's looking great these days! 👍 John Wells ah yes, I can see why they wouldn't want to share, as it could be proprietary. Hadn't thought of that either... But that's interesting on your distances, thanks for sharing. For me, I can travel 1500km to the northern end of our country, and it doesn't change at all for me. So I was a bit puzzled by that. Thanks for your insight also too sir, and have a great night!

I believe it is based on geo-location and not the actual country setting in your profile. I never publish my actual country, as hedgehogs are vulnerable to stalking by humans. Instead I use a random country at different times in my profile setting. What I notice is that irrespective of this country setting my nearby learner numbers hardly change. E.g. yesterday I was 'in' the UK and had about 410 nearby learners. Today I am 'in' Myanmar and also have about 410 nearby learners. My conclusion is that geolocation is used for this purpose. However I have no idea about the radius used to determine one's neighbours. As you are also in Myanmar, Anthony Quick, could you let me know if your number of nearby learners is much different from 410? If so, this is even more evidence that the country setting in your profile is immaterial in determining the nearby learners.

🐶Raj-Dog-Chhatrala☑️ that's really interesting, thanks for sharing. When I've traveled to different cities (14 hours apart) here in Myanmar, there was no change in the number. But when I'm stationery here in Yangon, the number steadily rises, but then every now and then drops by 20-50 people, and then slowly rises back up again. It's really odd... And then hearing about your experience makes it even more intriguing and hard to explain...🤔

⚡Prometheus ⚡ yeah bro, that's what I was wondering... But how big is that radius, and why does the number fluctuate? So weird... Like right now it's showing me they're are 952 nearby learners, which is down 8 from the record all time high of 960 just a couple weeks ago. Maybe it drops inactive users off? In which case, how long would it take to be dropped off?

+11

Exactly what ⚡Prometheus ⚡ said. Mods are not directly involved with the development of SoloLearn, and has as much context as the rest of the community when it comes to how the app works. Sending the query to SL would invite a definite answer. If I'd guess - Geolocation (if perms are given), IP-based location, or SL in-app country setting. A test can be conducted (disabling location perms / VPN / etc ).

It maybe uses the locations of Sololearn users to find people within a certain radius

Very interesting question!🤔 Don’t really know how to answer...

I wonder what is the purpose of publishing this number. Is it to encourage Sololearners to get to know them?

+10

Anthony Quick yes but what does SL gain from these connections? I think Janning⭐ has a point. Also more interaction may include more challenges, ad visibility and more revenue that way as well.

David Carroll hmm, that's interesting, thank you for your input. I'll have to test with one of my friends, and see if they set their device to another country, if they will still show in nearby. We might be on to something here...🤔😎

LOL!! ShortCode Anthony Quick

I only hope that with all this revenue they upgrade the servers and we have minimal downtime. But I think they have improved in this area.

ShortCode that's interesting! So when you change countries it doesn't change the number of nearby Learners?
