The biggest skill to learn is to be resourceful (i.e. knowing how to use the search bar or search engines).
This question is asked many times in various forms, but here's the briefest summary:
- Know enough about how the Internet works to be able to tell the difference between the front end and the back end
- Learn front end stuff (HTML, CSS, JavaScript) and any front-end frameworks the client is using
- Learn back end stuff (databases, APIs, etc.) and whatever back end languages the client is using
- Learn freelancing stuff (how to run your own business, communicate expectations with clients, put together contracts, consult lawyers and accountants, etc. -- E&O insurance recommended)
