An applet is a small Internet-based program written in Java, The applet is also able to run in HTML. The applet is usually embedded in an HTML page on a Web site and can be executed from within a browser.

An applet is also called miniapplication. It is also a source code Java programme. The minus of such programme is usually long time of loading.

yes as Jacob said japplets are little programs to add interactivity to the webpage it is embeded within html but now some of it had been replaced by flash and now flash is stopped and html 5 is being brought.
