What do we 'div' tags in html?

I can give you many examples here but best and easy way is giving an example from life.

imagine a table for dinner ; is it a good practice to pour all food on table or putting all food on plates and glasses (containers) which will keep food (content) together.

div is a container for a webpage as like as any other containers in life . we keep codes,graphics, works tidy by divs.
