Explanation of 9**1/2 needed

I came across the example showing( 9**1/2 = 3 )in the JavaScript course and while I get that the square root of 9 is 3 I have a hard time understanding what exactly the 0.5( 1/2 ) does here, can someone please explain it to me?

a number raised to the power of 0.5 is the same as taking the square root of that same number. https://www.cuemath.com/questions/what-is-the-value-of-x-to-the-power-of-12/

Equel It is because of the following math rule: a**(1/n) = a¹ᐟⁿ = ⁿ√a In your example: 3 = ²√9 = 9**(1/2) = 9**0.5
