Pls start by the Wikipedia article: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linux In short, it's an operating system. That is: a bunch of programs, libraries, drivers, etc. meant to make your system (computer, smartphone, etc.) operate. Specifically, it's an operating system meant to mimic Unix. And it's a free one - there are several distributions (different sets of programs, installers, etc.) you can use without cost, and (if you're really brave) you can create your own based on an existing one or from scratch.

Erarnitox No problem. We know it's already a flame war, but the world got used to call Linux both the kernel and the full-fledged distros. Anyway, both answer the OP question.

Felix Alcor because it is kind of a meme already from people supporting free software (like myself) to point it out. Most people know it is "only" a kernel, yet still call their OS "Linux" instead of "GNU/Linux", simply because it rolls nicer from the tong. If you are interested in that, I suggest you to check out "Richard Stallman - Free Software, Free Socienty". His views are somewhat radical/unpractical for most, but I do agree with most of what he is saying. (edit: he also made a TEDx talk about it)

I'm sorry I have to be this guy, but: Linux is just a kernel. It is the kernel for the Android Operating system as well as the GNU/Linux Operating system and also others. So it is an important part of an operating system (the kernel). It is free under the GPL2 und thus commonly found in many Operating systems. Most Linux OSes are GNU/Linux distributions. Where GNU describes the GNU core utils (essential operating system tool/programs) and Linux the kernel

Linux's like Windows or Mac a Operation system and no direct programming language. But other than Windows or Mac you can make huge changes in Linux(Operation system) with commands. Linux after that also Split in multipe systems like Ubuntu and so, but I will leave that because I'm also not an expert.
