Use of pointers in c++

Question

Do I get this right: if whatsapp would just make pointers to the pictures in my phones gallery instead of making stupid copies of my pictures (variables) in a whatsapp-folder, my storage wouldn't be full?!

Should have been a question if this is a possible use of pointers... I need a easy example to understand pointers ;)
