Newb

Iā€™m looking to change careers. Iā€™ve enjoyed learning different spoken languages for communication during travel as well as for the study of ancient manuscripts and textual meaning for translation purposes. Iā€™ve programmed machine code during past professions and remembered how much fun I had writing programs that made machines move. Iā€™m new to the programming field, as my past skills were for specific machines and operations in the manufacturing business. What is the first language a newbie should learn?

Considering what you've done, and your confidence, I'd start with something like C++, Java, or C#. I believe you'll find a lot of use in any of those. Best of luck to you! *edit* Here are some links to each of the courses. Also, I always forget to mention SQL. Regardless of what you learn, make sure that you learn SQL also. Most languages have a means of connecting to a SQL database, so knowing how to properly do queries is a must if you want to utilize databases.
