The >>> prompt is the Python interpreterā€™s way of asking you, ā€œWhat do you want me to do next?ā€ and it is called "chevron" prompt. - or - >>> is called a prompt, which means itā€™s something the computer displays to tell you itā€™s ready for your instructions. You can type things into that window, and the computer will obey them when it understands your commands.
