Domain Costs and Registrar

Why do we have to pay for domain names? Who is in charge of these domain names. I read on google something about a registrar, but who are in charge of these registrars? I also read something about we don't buy the domain, more or less we rent it from the provider. But who does the provider pay when we spend our money? What is the root of it all? Is it possible for us ourselves to find domain names that haven't been bought yet, and take that for free? Is it possible for us to have our own registrars or whatnot, and people buying from us? Is it possible for us to be on top of that 'system'? Who is? How does us having a website allow us to host game servers for example. I could not find any articles, so if they could help with explanations, can you please provide such links? Thank you!

The new one works, but I'm super sleepy. I'll check it in the morning. Thanks in advance!
