WordPress gives you many things you want but not everything. Sometimes we need minor modification to our theme on WordPress and for that we cannot change the entire theme. Thus, for that minor change we should know what to change and how to change and since WordPress is PHP based, So there will be only PHP, CSS and HTML coding to change. If you don't learn the language, you can't control the system (Wordpress or any cms or framework).

Same as knowing the workings of an engine, compared to not knowing and using what's available in the showroom/manufacturer. Sure, you can buy an already built car and just enjoy driving it or try and sell it. Can you work as an auto mechanic if you don't know how different parts are made/structured and how the interact between themselves to make the car go? No. Knowing how the engine works/made doesn't mean you have to build your own every time you want to drive a car. You can still go and buy yourself a car. However if it breaks down, it's handy to know stuff about cars/engines so that you can fix it yourself. Or if you want to tune your car, make it go faster... you can either do it yourself and spend some money and take it to a professional. Question is - who do you want to be? A user or a developer? In the end of the day, wordpress is just a library of already premade templates that you can combine and use for your own benefit. But these templates were built using simple programming language like HTML, CSS and PHP. So if you happy with what's already available - great! Use it. But if you want to customise a theme or a plugin to suit yours or your clients needs - this is where you will need to know these languages. In order to make these fine adjustments for the end product to suit your needs or your clients needs better.
