without Java is easy: use JavaScript :)
And if you don't like working on JavaScript, you can use the JQuery framework (which use JavaScript).
If you don't want at all JavaScript on your site, you can use some CSS for simple animations.

try using animation softwares.. like flash, game engines like unity unreal can also be used I believe..
