if it's a university project I don't think making first person shooter is a good idea because instructors don't care what the program does. I can tell you what you should do with your program:
1- it should include everything you learned in class (intermediate java ) try to include recursion trees and stacks.
2 - don't be afraid to make different classes. instructors like it.
3 - organize your code (easy to read and change)
4- and the most important one is the comment, clarifying every single thing with your comments is highly recommended.
