How best to make the most out of challenges

what can I do to make sure challenges benefit me more on sololearn, e.g how to pick opponents

focus on one language and understand it very good and u will always win, it doesn't matter how strong your opponents (maybe he/she will lose his/her internet connection) good luck!

Don't pick your opponents, randomly choose them. Don't hesitate if the opponent is a much higher level, maybe it'll ask harder questions and you can learn more.

Suppose you can't answer a question, screenshot it and search for the answer in Google. Learn that concept. Make sure that you won't commit the same mistake again. Do this and you will be capable of scoring a 5 in challenges in no time.
