Let me provide an alternative perspective: Those who attend codecamps or universities can also be self-learners, and self-learners can also attend codecamps or universities. :>

Yes. Most of world's greatest programmers are self learner. And that's why they are greatest. You have to give something new or better to the world. One self learner can certainly get better opportunity only if he/she has real talent and if you can prove that. Do something extraordinary. Whole world will appreciate your deed. You don't need any degree to do that. Remember world's all-time greatest scientists. Only few of them has University degrees. Yet they changed the world. Most important things are your interest, will, determination and dedication.

@Leon Now-a-days privileges are more obviously but human characteristics are still same. In my opinion knowledge does not depend upon any degree. Having a degree only means it is easier to find/get a job. But After getting the job, degree doesn't help, only knowledge helps. Kindly look at the pioneers of IT field of modern era. Many college or university dropouts have done really great things.

Faster, not deeper, so you always could choose what kind of result you're searching for. Almost all practice get for over 10000+ hours to become professional, but would that be work with primitives or a syntax extension depends on you. (=

People who built Microsoft, Facebook , Apple are university dropouts and self learners. I agree that they are dropped out from reputed universities but you cannot disagree that they tried self learning.. Get motivation from such people and go ahead. All the best.

If you go to a university it means that you want to obtain new knowledge and get a degree. If you study on yourself it means that you are eager to learn the subject. Motivation is the key to success.

Truthfully am getting it gradually, initially it was like a vain thing to me.I was inspired by the fact that mos famous programmers are not graduates in the field.
