What was the first programming language that you learned?

The answer to this question can tell you a lot about job applicant’s interest in programming. People who start learning languages when they’re young usually know languages like JavaScript, which is used for making interactive websites. Those who learned languages like Java and C++ probably didn’t develop a sincere interest in programming until they went to college. What to look for in an answer: Learn about applicant's experience Discover languages the applicant knows Measure the applicant's enthusiasm for programming Example: “C++ was the first programming language in an academic class. Before I went to college, though, I had picked up a fair amount of JavaScript and Python. I remember making my first math-based game with JavaScript. I still enjoy using those languages because they’re flexible enough that you can use them in a lot of contexts.”

Java and damn! It was rough!... I dropped it after learning conditionnal statements and loops... It is only 6 years later that I picked it up again. That time around I got the learning method right and everything came easy... And like ifl said I think that assessment is not necessarily right. Actually, I, myself, would never use it to gauge someone's enthusiasm in programming but to each their own ☺

i started with c++ when i was 13. i have used all of the .net languages except for F# since it was not around back then i have also used python, php, java, matlab,R,haskell, ocaml, arm assembyl,x86_64 assembly, mips assembly, c, vba, bash(if it counts), javascript(typescript and jsx if course also), TI Basic, sql GDScript and i‘m currently learning rust. i‘m using this app to refresh my knowledge because i haven‘t coded much for the last 2 years because of university. i think the statement that all the people that are passionate about programming are the ones that learned web programming or a scripting language is false, since they were the ones that weren‘t passionate enough to learn programming when the languages were not super easy

and in any case, even now, someone developing an interest for programming later in life is not necessarily less enthusiastic or competent than someone who had the chance to be exposed to it younger.
