I'm completely new to programming, start uni this year and I need to get a grip of Java as it's mandatory. what should I do in order to fully understand terminology, basics, principle's etc. I have seen the Java coding but do not understand one thing.

What is the difference between showing and selecting. I assume when I select something it can be manipulated, but I may be wrong. I.e. SHOW columns FROM customers vs. SELECT * FROM customers. Is there a difference?
