Competitive programming is programming in a competition, as a challenge. See

competitive programming is optimized programming, you get an execution time and memory limit, your code has to solve a problem really fast and using minimum resources. it is really cool, i suggest you go to codefights.com and hackerrank.com if you want to give it a try.
