N++ is smart enough to recognize the language of the code and highlight it properly. If well configured, it has an auto-complete although not as powerful as language-specialized IDEs.
All in all, it is worth to try it if you operate in different language specifics. Personally, I use it to view database files, as it is light and handles them well.
For coding I prefer specialized IDEs.

There are many text editors available for linux:
if with "text editor of Linux", you mean VIM, the main difference from Notepad++ is that it is keyboard centered (you do everything from the keyboard within the terminal): looks cool if you're good at it but until then, the learning curve is a pain.
Atom is a good editor if you are looking at a "n++like" experience on Linux
