What is wordpress.org,explain in detail?

what is in the wordpress's 6mb zip file,what is so special about it that 30% websites are created from it? can basic knowledge of javascript can help me to do something cool with it(plugins,themes, etc)????

WordPress is a CMS and is open source so you can develop html css php and javascript. I also use it daily and its absolutely limitless the possibilities. Basically a CMS with the power of a framework.
